What is CS4HS

CS4HS (Computer Science for High Schools) is a summer workshop sponsored by Google to promote computing in K12 classrooms. The Dept. of Math and Computer Science at VSU is pleased to announce that we will organize a CS4HS workshop this summer at VSU.

In this four-days workshop the participants (in-service/pre-service K12 teachers) will be introduced to various computing related activities. They will create basic Android apps using a software called App Inventor for Android, a software suitable for introducing programming to beginners. The participants will also create small robots using Lego Mindstroms NXT robot kits. They will also explore other beginners level programming tools like Scratch.

Our main goal is to introduce the participants to computer science and several novice programming tools. Hence, we don't require the participants to have any prior programming of computer science background.

Eligibility

Any in-service or pre-service K-12 teacher.

Cost

Thanks to Google this workshop is completely free. Very limited number of stipends ($275) are available for some of the participants.

Activities

In this workshop teachers will:
  • Learn programming through creating Android apps using a simple tool called App Inventor
  • Create and program Lego Mindstorms NXT robots
  • Explore computational thinking
  • Learn about different careers in computing
  • Network with other area K12 technology teachers
